A Review by Stephen Page
María Cristina Azcona’s Window to Heaven is a book of poems about terrorism, despair, and violence. Where does one find murder, sadness, and human-rights abuse? Here on Earth.
Azcona covers incidents such as the fall of the Twin Towers, infamous suicide bombings, and a recent beginning of war. She also brushes over themes of marital dysfunction and child abuse. She shows the cruelty of these matters, but she does not focus on the horrific—she offers solutions for the problematic state of the world.
Azcona depicts scenes with vividness that can only come from a good poet, and covers topics from a perspective that can only be seen by a humanist. Her book is about post 9-11, hope, and anti-violence. Where could one find peace in today’s world? Here on Earth if everyone read Azcona’s poems and followed her philosophies.
