Ernesto Che Guevara was an anti-capitalist who believed “a Marxist utopia could be attained through self-sacrifice and guerrilla warfare.” In Che’s Afterlife, Michael Casey explains the paradox of promoting Che’s ideals while displaying his mass marketed image. This book is an intelligent, informative, and pleasurable read. Casey has obviously researched his subject well, and he writes in a vivid manner that allows the reader to “see” the people and scenes portrayed. His writing style is anticipatory, which keeps the reader turning the pages to learn how Che’s image became an icon.
