Juan Nicolás Mele nace el 15 de octubre de 1923 en Buenos Aires. A los 11 años comienza sus estudios de dibujo y pintura con Enrique Rodríguez. Concurre a la Escuela de Bellas Artes Manuel Belgrano, –donde es compañero de Gregorio Vardánega y Tomás Maldonado– y a la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón.
Apenas egresado como profesor, Melé se acerca a la Asociación Arte Concreto-Invención, agrupación formada por Alfredo Hlito, Lidy Prati, Manuel Espinosa, Enio Iommi, los hermanos Lozza, Tomás Maldonado, Primaldo Mónaco, Alberto Molenberg, Claudio Girola, Jorge Souza, …
