Update: I’ve Moved to Uruguay!

That’s right—Tom and I are now living on
a five-acre farm in rural Uruguay! This
was a very heart-driven decision (those
are the best kind!) and we’re very happy.
In a way, the two of us are returning to
our roots—we grew up as country kids in
towns near each other and we met while
teaching English in rural Japan. Later
this month, we will begin volunteering
as English teachers at the local rural
school near our farm–and celebrate our
25th wedding anniversary! It’s almost
fall here, and we plan to learn as much
as we can about the area, the land and the
culture from our new neighbors before
we plant a single seed.

New Book on the Horizon

In addition to planning and planting,
I’ll be doing a lot of writing.
In fact, I am writing a new book!
My agent is shopping my book proposal
for a memoir about gardening, travel,
and creating connection in one’s chosen
community. It’s called Planted. I
hope to share news about a book
deal in the next few weeks.

If you’ve visited my New Globals blog
recently and wondered why I’m talking
about tarantulas in my backyard, it’s
because I’ve shifted the blog’s focus to
reflect this new direction. (The blog is
also found at MayaFrost.com/blog)
Sure, the blog is still about making bold
moves, but it’s less about education and
more about digging(!) into life abroad.

More Bookishness

Surprise: many of the biggest
fans of The New Global Student
are parents of young children!
These moms and dads have traveled
themselves and they are planning
to travel with the kids, move or
take their children abroad on
sabbatical. I’ve been doing
interviews with publications
for parents of elementary school
kids. Fun!

Also, my book is being used by
Rotary Clubs as a tool for both
promotion of their excellent exchange
program (it’s praised in the book)
and as a helpful aid to parents and
students preparing for a stint abroad.
I gave a presentation—via video—to
the Rotary Youth Exchange Officers’
convention in Chicago last month.
I got to stay home and enjoy summer
on the farm, and they learned more
about what parents need to know to
say “Yes!” to the high school
exchange experience for their kids.
Perfect!

What’s that you say? You haven’t read
The New Global Student yet? Find out
how to get fluent in a foreign language,
gain sizzling 21st century skills,
develop a blazing sense of direction
and earn a red-hot U.S. or Canadian
college degree without debt by the age
of 20.

NEW: Smart Education Design™
by Email

Farm life requires some adjustments.
Due to limited internet access, I’m
making some changes in how I help clients.
We’re shifting to email rather than phone—
and everyone has been thrilled!
It’s great to have a written record of the
tips I share, and because the email option
includes several rounds of correspondence,
there’s more time to ask questions and get
answers.

The $99 Kickstart series is an engaging
and personal way to make sure you’re
helping your student seize the most
advantageous (and fulfilling) opportunities
for learning and growth.

If you are the parent of a high school
student OR if you are considering a family
sabbatical or move abroad and need some help
planning, I encourage you to sign up for the
Kickstart series today!

I’ve got room for four new clients during
March and April. Will YOU be one of the
savvy parents making sure their kids get
a great global education without spending
a fortune? I hope so! Go here:

Four Books I Recommend

The World is Open: How Web
Technology is Revolutionizing
Education

Dr. Curtis J. Bonk is taking the ed-tech
world by storm with this frank and fun
look at how educators around the world
are using technology in creative ways.
Curt and I wrote our books at the same
time and shared a lot of ideas in the
process. He’s got some great stories
about how technology is changing education
for the better—and how you can benefit
from the tools he recommends.

Courageous Parents, Confident Kids:
Letting Go So You Both
Can Grow

I recently contributed a chapter to
Dr. Amy Tiemann’s new anthology called
Courageous Parents, Confident Kids. It’s
packed with great tips from parenting
experts about how to be a terrific mentor
to kids at every age. Remember the story
in my book about Talya, my youngest daughter
who ended up (accidentally) being in a
pageant for Spring Queen at her high
school in Mexico? Well, I wrote a fun
behind-the-scenes piece for parents about
how I overcame my own fear and ego (fego!)
to allow Talya to step up and truly shine.
You can get a fr*ee download of the ebook
version of Courageous Parents, Confident Kids
during the launch!

DIY U: Edupunks, Edupreneurs and the
Coming Transformation of Higher Education

My friend Anya Kamenetz, Fast Company
staff writer and author of Generation
Debt, has added her voice to the cause
of alternative higher education! In her
new book, she takes a look at how higher
ed is changing and what students (and
others) can do to stay ahead of the curve.
Anya and I corresponded while she was
writing this book, and I’m thrilled that
she will be bringing a lot of media attention
to many of the options I talk about in
The New Global Student! Learn more about
her book at http://www.DIYUBook.com

College Without High School:
A Teenager’s Guide to Skipping High School
and Going to College

This great book by Blake Boles came out
a few months ago, but I’m still a big fan
and I frequently recommend College Without
High School to parents and students. If
you’re looking for a book that really focuses
on how to create a very unique and personalized
education—without ever attending high school–
don’t miss this one!

THANK YOU

I’m so grateful for such wonderful
support from YOU—the parents, students
and educators who are committed to helping
kids get an
exhilarating education.
If you know someone who could benefit from
an eyes-wide-open perspective on education,
I hope you’ll invite them to sit for a spell
with my website at:
